AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution may be finalised but won't be matched with all games
AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution is surely the most eagerly anticipated feature for anyone lucky enough to have bagged themselves a new Radeon artwork card o'er the last six months. It promises to be the reddish team's answer to Nvidia's formidable Deep Learning Tops Sampling (DLSS) tech, and could be the saviour for AMD's first-gen ray tracing attempts.
But IT's still seemingly a long elbow room unsuccessful from a terminal version and, even though AMD has in public said it's yet to finalize precisely how IT wish work, 4A Games has already expressed that FidelityFX Super Resolution is incompatible with its rendering techniques and bequeath non embody supported in Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition.
It's not the fact that FFXSR ISN't releas to feature in the remastered Metro Exodus that's interesting hither, disdain it being the first life-size game to be released with irradiate-trace GPU compatibility as a minimal system requirement. It's that 4A Games seems to be claiming information technology knows how AMD's new characteristic will work and that makes IT incompatible with its own engine.
In a FAQ for Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition (via @Locuza_) there is the following motion:
- Will you constitute adding in AMD Super resolution later?
We will not be adding specific abide for this, as it is not well-matched with our rendering techniques. Even so we have our own Temporal based reconstruction tech enforced that natively provides the same or improve image quality benefits for all computer hardware.
Metro publisher Late Silver clarified that head in a watch over-up email, saying that developer 4A Games "has non evaluated the AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution feature for Metro Exodus at this time."
"In our FAQ, we were referring to the AMD FidelityFX open origin project quality toolkit which targets traditional translation techniques that our new RT only render does not use, and noting that we have our own Temporal Reconstruction tech implemented natively which provides great quality benefits for wholly hardware, so do not currently contrive to utilize any other toolkits," a Thick Silver repp explained. "4A Games is always motivated to innovate, evaluate, and use the newest technologies that will benefit our fans across totally platforms and hardware."
The plus side is that it also sounds like AMD has actually made a final decision on how to conjointly a feature it actively announced around the launch of the Radeon RX 6800 XT some six months agone. IT was worrying that even just a month past AMD's Scott Herkelman was telling PCWorld that it was still "evaluating the some different shipway" of implementing its translation of DLSS.
"Actually what matters most to us is: What will the bet on developers want to use?" Herkelman said back in March. "Because, at the finish of the day, if IT's just for America and we force multitude to do it, it's not a good outcome.
"And sol we would rather say 'gaming community, which one of these techniques would you rather construe with us implement?' So that way information technology can be immediately spread across the industry and hopefully foil-platform. There's a raft of bring we have to practice there… IT's really which matchless full treatmen the best for the game developers to implement is what we're looking for."
Sadly, for AMD, it looks corresponding leastwise one of those game developers does not want to use the method that the red team seems to suffer chosen, some that might cease up being. Which is a shame, especially if it signals latent difficulties in gaining funding for the new technology.
DLSS is not just a performance salve for the arrive at taken when enabling ray trace, used on its own it sack deliver a Brobdingnagian performance intoxicat without negatively impacting fidelity. Freeborn performance for whatever FidelityFX Superior Resolution-harmonious card would certainly beryllium welcome whether it's tied to ray tracing or non.
It is important to say, however, that this is just one game developer, and one unfit locomotive, that claims incompatibility, so information technology could very well just be an edge case for AMD's FFXSR. If the bulk of developers are onboard I'm okay with one game not supportive it, especially given the within reason patchy, though TRUE increasing, support for Nvidia's DLSS.
