How To Repair Tire Rim Damage

Experience tells united states pocket-size repairs on wheels and rims can be done.

Accidentally curbing your overnice blend wheels is a proficient fashion to completely ruin your day.

Thankfully, most minor harm is a relatively easy repair.

Yup. Yous can fix curbed, scuffed or scratched wheels yourself if y'all are the handy blazon.

A bit of paint touch-upwards experience helps likewise!

Actually…

Believe it or not, making cosmetic wheel repairs at abode is not that difficult (if you can observe the paint!).

When DIY is Not an Option

Of course, you can always call a mobile alloy cycle repair service. Sending your wheels to a cycle repair shop is another route.

But….

Did y'all hit a pothole or slam into a curb? How bad is information technology?

I'll be honest…

Bent or flat-spotted wheels often cannot be repaired.

Sometimes a wheel refurbishment shop is the just option.

Or is information technology?

You can also search for a 2d-hand blend wheel. I've had luck buying a used alloy bicycle. It matched my ready.

Mobile Alloy Bike Refurbishment

Curbed Alloy Wheel Damage
If y'all accept e'er washed it, you lot know the feeling. Curbing your alloy wheels (e.g., scraping them on a curb while parking) puts a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. (Paradigm by NASAracer)

Before we dig in, I want to share a couple of quick stories.

I recently had my outset experience with a mobile wheel repair service.

Let me tell you. The guy was amazing!

I had taken my Porsche Cayenne in for new tires. The shop was about empty. The manager put two techs on my auto.

I couldn't believe it.

They had me out in record time. I was feeling practiced with a new fix of Pirelli tires.

But, that's merely one-half the story…

I washed the car when I got home. It'south then I noticed damage to both wheels on the right side.

One had a rim scrape from the pry bar used to guide the tire on the rim. The other had a nick on the face of a bike spoke.

I was actually furious!

Unfortunately, I didn't come across the damage earlier leaving the store. I was certain I'd get the "run effectually" from the store.

You know what? I was totally wrong.

Instead they put me in touch with a local San Diego company (Velvet Touch Wheel Services). My tech's name was Hayden.

He did an amazing job. Within an 60 minutes he had both wheels looking perfect again. I don't mean "good match," I hateful PERFECT.

Guys, I literally could not see where he made the repair.

Hither'southward my point:

I dissimilarity this type of service with my previous experience (continue reading) of trying to practise the chore myself.

But before I tell you this DIY story, let me simply say this:

I am an experienced painter. I have refinished many cars.

In fact, creating custom machine bodies was a hobby of mine when I was a beau.

Here nosotros go! A long, long time agone…

(Not really, depends on how old you lot are!)

In 2005, I had purchased a new set of Kinesis wheels. They were a 3-piece pattern with a polished rim and a metallic silver in the eye.

I needed to change brake pads and fluid. This was before long afterwards getting the wheels.

Somehow I spilled restriction fluid on ane of the wheels. This caused the pigment to discolor and cicatrice.

I decided to fix it myself rather than send it in for refinishing.

That turned out to exist a large mistake.

Accept information technology from me and acquire from my bad decisions.

In fact, I'grand not likely to do a mag wheel repair again. I volition share the experience with you lot at present.

When Things Don't Go Smoothly

I ordered a can of Wurth silver bike pigment. Also, some Wurth articulate coat lacquer.

I prepared the cycle past sanding the damaged area while waiting for the paint to make it. I also shot it with a coat of primer.

When I got the delivery I noticed something…

Get this!

Turns out the paint was defective and would non spray. I ordered another.

The replacement arrived in working gild. This time the color did not friction match. Only the tint was correct.

Needless to say, no amount of finessing would go the finish to match.

Frustrating to say the least!

I called the local Wurth rep to ask if in that location was a dissimilar lot than the ii cans I had.

You guessed it.

The product was unavailable for an indefinite time.

A manufacturing issue. No kidding!

Here's what I did.

I re-shot the entire center of the wheel with a unlike brand (1Z Einszett).

Sadly, it'southward not as close a match as what Wurth is supposed to be. Close enough.

Well, there I was, backing into a parking space against a curb.

I was in a hurry and I heard it… SCRAPE!

One fraction of a 2nd and barely moving. Got out and looked at the rim…

OUCH!!!

Curbed Alloy Wheel Damage
As you lot can see, this is minor wheel damage with very little pigment and metal repair required. It could exist touched up with a paint bear on up stick, but it would not look right. (Image by NASAracer)

Well, no demand to fear. I've done this enough times.

There's an piece of cake mode to do home repairs with a few unproblematic items.

Note: This particular process only covers light scuffs.

This isn't meant to repair a damaged wheel or scuffs or significant harm to the rim.

The focus is this:

Annoying superficial wheel scuffs (the ones that happen more times than we intendance to admit).

Sure, there are enough of good retail services for this. Many of you lot will happily use them.

But, I'grand inpatient.

I have the free time (generally) to spend a couple of hours on a repair.

Plus, information technology really takes the edge off "donking" my wheels – when I know I can fix it myself.

The required parts are equally follows:

  • Wurth Silvery Bicycle Lacquer
  • Wurth Loftier Gloss Articulate Lacquer
  • A quality primer
  • Bondo Spot Putty
  • 240 and 400 wet & dry sand paper
  • A good paint thinner
  • Masking tape & masking paper

Alternatively, you lot could get Wurth's Bike Scuff Repair Kit.

Information technology includes their Clean-Solve, 1Z Einszett Silver Bike Spray Paint, their Loftier Gloss Clear Lacquer, a Cobra Mango Cakewalk Microfiber Towel and 2 Wolfgang Finger Pockets.

DIY wheel reconditioning supplies
I have a can of scratch-filler primer, the Wurth wheel paint and clear (got mine at Functioning Products), some paint thinner, Bondo spot putty (or equivalent), sand paper and some 240 and 400 dust sandpaper (if you lot are REALLY anal, get some 600 dust paper). -Image by NASAracer-

Clean, Clean, Clean

This is one of the most important steps.

Utilise pigment thinner to thoroughly make clean the unabridged expanse effectually the harm. Remove all traces of wax and silicones from the wheel surface.

No demand to worry.

I'll remind you every pace of the way to make clean, clean and clean.

I'll probably terminate up wiping downwardly these surfaces 10 or more times earlier painting.

If yous don't do this, the rest is pointless. The repair only won't work!

Also, y'all should only work on the area of the bicycle that is damaged.

Don't go nuts!

Don't endeavor to paint half your bike on the machine.

For this technique to succeed… nosotros will merely sand and pigment the firsthand area.

Cleaning a wheel for reconditioning and repair
Use a lint-free cloth for cleaning your wheel. Prior to cleaning with paint thinner (Prepsol is even better), scrub the tire and bicycle with dish detergent (Dawn) to remove as much silicone (tire protectant) as possible. Dry thoroughly. -Image past NASAracer-

Sand and Putty

I like to start past masking the tire from the bike.

Get the masking tape well behind the rim. Next, lightly sand the area to a squeamish "feather" with 240 grit sandpaper.

Now, apply spot putty.

Important: This unabridged projection will work best if its a dainty, warm day.

Spot putty drying time is minutes. But, if it's cold or damp, this projection may not work out too well.

So, here's what you lot exercise…

Work in direct sunlight, if necessary. Keep the work area warm (non hot).

Recall to proceed your sanding to the firsthand area. Trust me on this!

Utilize a sanding block (modest wood cake or rubber erasure) to get the best results. Although dry sanding works, moisture sanding is best. (Epitome past NASAracer)
Sanding wheel for wheel repair
Here is the event later on sanding. Information technology'due south fix for primer. (Paradigm past NASAracer)

Once you've done the 1st round of putty, switch to the finer sandpaper (400 dust in my case).

Y'all desire to sand and putty until it feels and looks flush.

You'll know – because it's a cute affair 🙂

I use the paper wrapped around a slice of wood. Information technology makes for a flat sanding cake.

Sand with a flat cake to become a shine, level cease.

Okay, here'due south where a bit of laziness could create a problem.

An entirely new project.

You see, the silvery metallic pigment volition become everywhere. I'g talking permanently attached to the fenders.

You don't want that! I'yard just warning you guys!

Mask advisedly and cover the entire auto with an old sail or equivalent.

Applying primer for alloy wheel repair.
With a light glaze of primer you will be able to meet pin holes that demand spot putty. (Image by NASAracer)

I've used the scratch-filler primer and sanded it. I also put a flake more putty on.

Note: this is the first place where I use my special technique.

Immediately later on I spray the primer (or paint) what do I do?

I clean the overspray off the spokes (clean rag and paint thinner). Likewise, the area around the inside of the rim.

That's important.

Nosotros merely desire to paint the repair.

Listen! Only the clear coat will be sprayed without wiping off the over-spray.

At this point, wait for the primer to fully dry. Then, lightly sand it with 400 or 600 grit sandpaper.

Before spray painting wheels with silver, clean with a lint-free cloth.

Painting Truths

VITAL: Read the instructions on the can!

That's a must.

Here's an example of what the manufacturer may be trying to tell you:

Many paints, in cold temperatures (or at to the lowest degree in clammy conditions), will be a mess to piece of work with.

What'due south universal?

  1. Milkshake the tin for at least a total minute.
  2. Push the spray nozzle as you lot sweep across. Release at the end.
  3. Spray on, spray off.  Spray on, spray off.
  4. Use a very fine glaze. You're non trying for glossy. Clearcoat will practice that!
Spray a fine coat of paint holding the can 9-10" away from the wheel.
This is roughly the distance I used the tin can from the wheel. I highly recommend practicing on a scrap part to get used to the distances and thickness this paint sprays. (Image by NASAracer)

At present nosotros should be near done merely (as always), Pete got inpatient.

Look. He sprayed the clear way too shortly.

Equally a outcome, the clearcoat lifted the silver paint and messed upwards my chore.

This is no biggie.

Take a deep breath, exit your rag and the paint thinner and take it all off.

I caught a break. The thinner I used did not eat into the primer.

I simply cleaned the bicycle (again) and re-sprayed the silverish paint.

Allow wheel paint to dry thoroughly before applying clear.
Here's the paint lifting due to the clearcoat being applied besides presently. Be sure to give plenty of drying time. (Image by NASAracer)
Carefully remove the silver wheel paint overspray
Okay, fast forward a few minutes… I had to whorl the car forward a bit to keep it in the sun and I had cleaned (and let fully dry out) the wheel and RE-sprayed the silver. Now I'k carefully removing the silver over spray. (Epitome by NASAracer)

Apply two sparse coats of clear (20-30 minutes of drying time) between coats Later on the silver colorcoat dries.

Overnight is best.

Later y'all can utilise 1500-2000 grit moisture and dry or a fine cutting compound to feather in traces of the repair.

Use a final smoothen to restore full gloss.

Alloy Wheel Repair – The Takeaway

The job is easy enough. Don't sweat it guys.

The problem most DIYers run across is finding the right paint.

Reality dictates i brand and color does not fit all.

Actually, the German language motorcar makers have pretty much standardized. Only the Asian imports have several colors. GM, Ford and Chrysler never hold on anything.
